Running the gauntlet is a part of some gang initiations. Even some college fraternities have something like that. There was an early episode of the tv show Riverdale where Jughead had to run the gauntlet as the final phase for his initiation into the
serpents.
Many years ago I read an article in a mainstream newspaper about a former gang member in New York who had left the gang and turned his life around. The article said that to be admitted to the gang, the guy had had to walk past a gauntlet of gang members, each of whom punched him in the gut as he went by. The reporter wrote, "He took their best shots without going down."

Did the "Riverdale" initiation scene involve gutpunching? Was any of it hot?

It was only about 3 or 4 punches - maybe one gut punch

It's season 2, episode 5, and it's on YouTube. I did see one gutpunch.

It was a news article or, more accurately, an op-ed, in the New York Daily News.
