Pulling Guard

If we're starting from the feet, I usually go about 50%/50% going for a takedown or pulling guard (pulling, not "sit on my ass"). The reason is that I want to get better, so I often try to vary my game when I'm rolling in the academy. In tournaments, it depends on whom I'm fighting. I don't just yield takedowns to wrestlers or judoka (or anyone going for a takedown), but again I vary it. If I'm hurt then the probability of pulling guard goes up. If the match is a stalemate, the probability of pulling guard goes up. If we're fighting very hard in an even match, then it really depends on the match. I don't like having a set style (though I do have a gameplan).

I agree. In fact Me and a coach take advantage of no one in the mat rooms to stay and do takedown starts.

Its knackering though! I need more commitment to the shoot... Gi or no gi.

The procedure of most rolls in BJJ schools starting form the ground evolved for space reasons as well as some safety reasons; however standing is also part of BJJ (IMHO).As one of my instructors once said. "The typical BJJ match starts where you shake hands and one guy then sits on his ass"

My question to those in the group. When space or safety is not an issue do u go for takedowns or pull guard and why. IN my case I go for the takedown. as I feel it is also part of the game and I feel comfortable in attempting takedowns. Thanks

If room permits I'll stand up, I feel it's easier to pass gaurd with a takedown.
