BJJ Class 03.09.15. Well, I'm still going strong and turning up....the instructor did remark on this.
So : this lesson involved a warm up on spider guard. It then involved at the end kicking your opponent's leg from behind, using your foot like a monkey (apparently!) remembering to let go of your opponent.
After that we got down to work learning a technique when you are stuck in guard and getting over this. First step was to make sure that you had a hand on your opponents gi (your opponent was in guard) and a hand on the sleeve (your opponent is on his/her back on guard and you are between their legs). You put your knee between your opponents legs. Your knee should be on the same side as the hand of your opponent that is grabbed otherwise your opponent could grab your other leg. Your other leg breaks out from underneath.
You then work your knee over the thigh of the opponent. Your other leg swings round and you get into side control, immediately getting your hand down at the opponent's side so they can't break out. You then can start doing arm bars if you want.
The next move involved a variation of this but still ending up in the same position. And I've forgotten.
King of the Mats followed - I lasted all of 20 seconds.
I asked the instructor if I should look up some videos on Youtube. Interestingly enough he did tell me not to watch them but to watch matches instead, so that if I adopt a hero, then I will start to behave like this hero. I just hope I don't get confused and start watching Batman videos. I'm not entirely convinced about this.
I am 6'3", 215, fit, skilled and train BJJ (longer time blue belt).

I like competitive submission (no gi BJJ) though I train in a gi so we can do that too. I love eve matches but can adjust for size/experience differences within reason.
Looking for sparring partners, though usually wind up teaching new students. If you're interested in Grappling - I teach Tues, Fri and Saturday at the Castro Rec Center, in San Francisco CA.
This is great to know as can have a place to train if I get to that area...what are the times of these sessions and which transit route(s) serves this location. Thanks

Best transit method is Muni to the Castro Station. If staying outside SF, best to take the Bart to the Civic Center Station, then transfer to the Muni.

Live in the San Diego area and always up for BJJ practice (do both no gi and gi). Lots of free open mat sessions in the area, all easy to get to by the excellent public transit system here.

OK, so you started in Guard and Broke Out. I'm assuming that one of the techniques in this video was the one used.
Then by the sounds of it, you were doing a knee over pass. There are 2 variations of this transition into side control.
Uhrm .. I can't find the 2nd pass. =(
