Bro when you are as massive and powerful as you are, I think ANY hold would devastate the opponent but there is no doubt of the rack as a finisher. I have screamed my submission in it. But I voted for the bear-hug for the reason I gave, not to belittle the rack, which is devastating for a very lightweight jobber like I am.
just love racking a guy or 2 lol. Had a 2on1 match in florida last year and finished them off with a double rack. Not easy balancing 2 guys and 270lbs on your shoulders but felt awesome.
Having been in both holds I would have to agree that the shoulder back breaker is more painful, I have been in both too and have had my mouth covered in both as well. I have to admit though, if applied right the rack can be cranked so hard that it becomes hard to breath. If applied with the hand over my mouth and held on a long time the shoulder back breaker becomes more and more painful as the time slowly ticks by, especially when being bounced up and down. I love to be tortured like this with total no mercy so I can feel maximum pain while being tortured a long long time. Paul

The rack is often referred to as being an advanced version of the shoulder backbreaker, and as a result you would think it would therefore be more painful/damaging than a it's common counterpart, but from personal experience I've found the opposite to be true.
To be fair, I *did* feel it, and was in genuine discomfort while being racked, and it's entirely possible that the guy putting it on me wasn't working it very hard, but I just remember the single shoulder backbreaker being more directly painful to my spine.
I admit that the rack offers more *control* over how much the victim's back bends, since the applier can pull on both the upper and lower parts of their body to torque the pressure, and there is also the malicious possibility to add extra pain by grabbing the crotch, or insult to injury by hand-gagging the mouth so the victim can't submit, but I don't have any real experience with being in racks like that.

But i think the most painful way to do a backbreaker on a guy is this way....its a killer on your back but great fun!
