You cannot expect an unbiased view from an article that starts like that. And indeed it isn't. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the IOC and I hope they will reverse their decisions, but I wish heads were cooler and discussions were more rational with less namecalling.
What so-called leaders? The IOC? They are your leaders?
Moving beyond the realm of knee-jerk reactions: The OIC has voiced some concern before that wrestling events hand out too many medals (there's greco-roman, freestyle, several weight divisions, separate for men and women). What I believe is happening is that they want to eliminate greco.
Instead of going about it directly, they first announce the complete elimination of both styles, so that a couple of months down the line they can appear very cooperative and open to compromise when they only eliminate greco. I have no evidence, this is just my interpretation and speculation, but it seems to be the most likely scenario. Much more likely than they remove one of the oldest olympic events entirely.
Also consider that 2020 is Turkey's turn to host the Olympic, and Turkey has a vested interest in wrestling. I forget how many of the Turkish medals came from wrestling, but I remember they have done very well historically.
That is a logical analysis. Turkey is not a done deal yet though, since it is just one of the three short-listed candidates. And if the IOC board members really wrestled, they would know that greco-roman is totally different in approach and training from freestyle.
Another scenario is that that IOC took out wrestling in anticipation of the overwhelming backlash, so that none of the other sports under consideration would get in.
But the worst scenario is the one where the IOC tries to "save face" and stand its ground in not putting back wrestling so soon after it has voted to take it out as a core sport.
In any case, I do not want to give up without a fight. After all, I am not a jobber. :)
It is such a shock to hear that wrestling will be taken out of the Olympics starting 2020, considering it is one of the oldest sports in the world, and it is a founding sport in the 1896 Olympics! I don't know if it will be effective, but maybe we should start some sort of petition campaign before the IOC makes its final decision in September 2013. Our sport has been marginalized for too long, even though it has transcended international barriers! I don't know how to go about doing it in such a way that it will be considered a legitimate petition though. Any suggestions? Are you guys up for it?
